French Colonial

This expansive residence is a richly detailed tribute to true classic Creole principles. Its architectural vocabulary would have been familiar to European colonists, compelled to adapt their Continental tastes to the sea-tropical Gulf Coast swampland three hundred years ago. Abundance of native materials like cypress, and a labor force of slaves and conscripted Haitians, inevitably added stylistic and practical variations to the neoclassical precedents of eighteenth-century Europe. The endurance of this vernacular is evidence of its suitability, even now, to the climate and style of life in the Deep South.
