Moderne

The client for this commission confessed a passion for the Thirties, when the Art Deco and Moderne styles provided a sparkling backdrop for the smart set on both sides of the Atlantic. The resulting residence is architectural alchemy, a melding of between-the-wars nostalgia and an equally strong dose of classical scholarship. The five-part parti, with hipped roofs and twin chimneys, is an exquisitely proportioned paean to the classical in palest feathered stucco. Inside, room leads to room in a proper enfilade sequence, flanking a central salon that subtly distills the essence of Palladian Italy.
